Even if you live in a \u2018blue-collar\u2019 town, hiring employees who are willing to work, know what they\u2019re doing and show up ain\u2019t easy. Come to think of it, you may not be helping things by telling your kids to stay away from \u2018the trades.\u2019<\/li>\r\n<\/ul><ul>\r\n    <li><strong>3) Marketing has become \u2018geekiness on steroids<\/strong>.\u2019 It used to be simple. Meet with your ad rep. Run the ad. Get phone calls. Sell jobs. Now you\u2019re blown away by terms like SEO, blogging, Email marketing. You\u2019re losing control over your lead generation. Sure, there are people who prospect your business daily and say they will \u2018get you on the top page of Google.\u2019 You doubt they have your best interests in mind. Here\u2019s why I say this.<\/p><p>I\u2019m a self-described adult-version of <em>Alex P. Keaton <\/em>from the show <em>Family Ties <\/em>(if you\u2019re old enough to remember this reference)<em>. <\/em>What I mean by this is I\u2019m a business geek.<\/p><p>In business I love learning almost as much as I do making money (maybe that\u2019s not a good thing). I\u2019m the only guy I know (that\u2019s sound funny to say) who listens to podcasts, takes notes and writes blog posts while running in my basement at 3:45 in the morning. Yes \u2013 I\u2019m touched. However, as a proud member of the \u201910 Step Crazy Guy Program.\u2019 I\u2019m only on the first step, but at least I admit my wackiness. \u00a0<\/p><p>I love business. I love the building products. I\u2019ve been in remodeling since 1989 when my Dad floated me a loan and let me buy 50% of his <a href=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/products\/glass-block\/basement-bathroom-windows\">glass block window<\/a> supply and installation company.<\/p><p>Today I lead 2 businesses.<\/p><p>The first is Innovate Building Solutions. We are a nationwide wholesaler of unique products. Our product lineup includes <a href=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/products\/bathrooms\/laminated-diy-shower-bathroom-wall-panels\">grout free shower<\/a> and tub wall panels, <a href=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/products\/glass-block\/glass-block-shower\">glass block showers<\/a> and windows, glass counters and <a href=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/products\/glass-block\/glass-block-floors-bridge-walkway\">glass flooring<\/a> systems. \u00a0In addition, we are a specialty remodeler (focused on bathroom and window projects) in Columbus and Cleveland Ohio. Yes, this makes me strange in the \u2018hands-on\u2019 construction biz.<\/p><p>I love to connect with others.<\/p><p>I love to learn and grow.<\/p><p>With this blog, I now have 3 active blogs.<\/p><p>My first blog (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/\">News from the Block<\/a>)<\/em> was started 8 years ago. It\u2019s written to help consumers with bathroom, window and glass flooring projects.<\/p><p>My second blog, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/innovatehomeorg.com\/blog\/\">Professionally Organized<\/a>, <\/em>helps homeowners with ideas to gain control over clutter with better closet, pantry, garage and entryway organization systems.<\/p><p>With this third blog I\u2019m looking to help you (as a person working inside a remodeling or building business) on the challenges (and your desire to grow) a building business.<\/p><p>The reason I want to do this is because I love to learn, grow and teach. I\u2019ve been writing about digital marketing for a nationwide home organization pub &#8211; <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkingnetwork.com\/closets\">Closets and Organized Storage<\/a>. <\/em>I\u2019ve been speaking on leadership and digital marketing at conferences. I love to share what I\u2019m learning (and where I\u2019ve messed up). I want to do these things and laugh with you along the way.<\/p><h2><strong>What kind of articles can you expect? How often will I write?<\/strong><\/h2><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>While I did tell you I love to write (and am now writing on my 3<sup>rd<\/sup> blog), I also do run out of time. It\u2019s certainly not my goal for my wife Rose to dump me after 32 years of marriage because I\u2019m constantly banging on a keyboard. It\u2019s what you know that just ain\u2019t so.\u201d <\/em><\/p><p>You see \u2013 there are things we not only need to learn in this journey, but also tools, tactics and approaches we need to \u2018un-learn.\u2019 We can\u2019t allow ourselves to get behind the times (or get stuck in the mud in how we do what we do).
