In a perfect world I\u2019d compare every system known to man (and woman, I don\u2019t want to be sexist here, otherwise I\u2019d get in trouble with my wife!) \u2013 but then the article would be so long, no one would get to the end.<\/p> So, instead I\u2019m going to compare 4 options. They are: At this point you may be asking, \u201cMike, do you have any \u2018skin\u2019 in this game?\u201d <\/em>And the short answer is yes, and no. And now (unfortunately) I really DO sound like a politician (and I don\u2019t say that in a positive way \u2013 ha! ha!).<\/p> My company wholesales to age in place, home access contractors, and retail remodeling contractors the Fibo<\/a> <\/em>and PanelPro shower surround<\/a><\/em> lines (2 of the lines mentioned above) and BestBath shower pans<\/a><\/em> (mostly for roll in showers). However, this DOES NOT mean these are always the products even I<\/em> recommend to my customers.<\/p> And that\u2019s because no one of the 4 offerings being compared is THE LINE, which should be used in all situations. And it\u2019s \u2018sales malpractice\u2019 \u2013 and short-sighted to get \u2018married\u2019 to one product because in the long run you\u2019re not offering your customers (and your business) the best choices by being exclusive to just one (IMHO).<\/p> So \u2013 in this article my goal is be as balanced and give it to you straight. Towards this end, I\u2019ll look at these 4 wall panel alternatives and \u2018grade\u2019 them along 7 criterion. At the end, whether you agree (or disagree), with my scores let me have it. Let\u2019s dig in!<\/p> Sometimes \u2013 much to your chagrin \u2013 you\u2019ve got to use the lowest priced product to win a bid. This is truer in waiver programs vs. private pay jobs. And this is where the \u2018wafer-thin\u2019 acrylic and fiberglass systems from local home centers can be the big winners (and the right choice, even if they\u2019re sometimes a pain in the rear to install).<\/p> However, if you need a \u2018better value\u2019 (not the cheapest), higher quality product which is priced competitively, and won\u2019t snap like a green bean, this is where PanelPro rigid PVC panels<\/a> <\/em>can be a good option.<\/p> And if your customer\u2019s budget is larger this is where Fibo <\/em>and BestBath <\/em>can work.<\/p> Let\u2019s face it, home access contracting is NOT the same as retail bathroom remodeling where prospects would love to have a new shower to replace their old and grungy one but aren\u2019t desperate to get it done ASAP.<\/p> However, in age in place, or accessible bathroom remodels sometimes are urgent especially if a life event (a fall or accident) sends your client (and their family\u2019s) world into a tailspin. This is why in-stock availability is essential. You need a product \u2013 like yesterday. Or at least very quickly (even if it\u2019s a \u2018custom size\u2019). Here\u2019s how I\u2019d grade these products based on availability (for \u2018stock\u2019 AND \u2018custom\u2019 sizes) \u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p> As anyone knows who\u2019s had a customer who bought a \u2018bargain basement\u2019 plumbing fixture from a home center \u2013 sometimes the \u2018cheapest\u2019 line can be a PITA to install. Cheap initial purchase prices (with inferior shower panels which are thinner, crack when you look at them and don\u2019t reach the ceiling, requiring more finishing time for you) aren\u2019t the best.<\/p> Then throw in a window inside the tub to shower conversion\u2013 or walls which are funky and out of plumb, that\u2019s when a difficult to install shower wall panel system can become your undoing (and cause profits to go \u2018south\u2019 quicker than you can say Taco Tuesday!). <\/em><\/p> Check out the ease of installation grades on our four wall surround systems below.<\/p> Much as you might wish all jobs were \u2018standard\u2019 tub to shower conversions, and weren\u2019t crazy showers built by some DIY\u2019er or custom builder years ago, this IS NOT the reality of bathroom remodeling. In remodeling (especially if you\u2019re in an older town or install in a lot of \u2018these Old Houses\u2019<\/em>) the following \u2018equation\u2019 is true\u2026\u2026<\/p> Bathroom Remodeling = WACKINESS! <\/em><\/p> So, if you need to make a custom shower, which shower surround system is best (and no, a BestBath<\/em> pun is NOT intended here)<\/p> If your customer is demanding a longer installation warranty (or have to deal with the job site problems with shower panels which crack on site, or cause delays when they arrive broken during shipping), this is where a supplier\u2019s warranty, durability, and material composition will make or break profitability.<\/p> And while buying the cheapest stuff can (in the short run) sound like <\/em>a good idea, if you\u2019re \u2018fighting\u2019 the installation, or panels are cracking easier than a Pringle\u2019s <\/em>chip, you might express a few \u2018choice words\u2019 when you have to return to the job site to \u2018re-install\u2019 and your watching your profits go down the drain. This is why researching warranties, durability, and the expected life span of products (after all what you install IS your reputation) is important.<\/p> So, which panel system scores best along these criteria? See below.<\/p> Are the seams and corner waterproofing design a big problem in wall panels? Yes, no, and maybe. How\u2019s that for a \u2018P.C.\u2019 (Politically Correct) answer?<\/p> Wall surround systems with poorly designed seams and corners can be a problem \u2013 and should be avoided. This is one reason some remodelers only want to use \u2018full-sized\u2019 panels on every wall.<\/p> However, there\u2019s negatives to \u2018full sized\u2019 60\u201d panels which are big, bulky, flimsy, heavy, and\/or prone to cracking in installation and\/or during shipment. They\u2019re used to simply offering a \u2018functional and safe\u2019 shower and forget people (even those who are older or need accessibility) don\u2019t want institutional (white, glossy, generic \u2013 YUCK)! Many contractors take the \u2018path of least resistance.\u2019 They sell the same stuff approved for waiver jobs to their private pay clients. And some wonder why they lost sales to retail remodelers who closed the job they also quoted at FAR higher prices. And here\u2019s why.<\/p> They were showing white. They were showing glossy. They were showing plasticky, ugly and geriatric-looking molded wall surrounds. Ask yourself, would you want your house to look like a patient room at a hospital?<\/p> If you answered no, I\u2019m 100% with you. I\u2019ll admit my wife and I like our surroundings (and we think it\u2019s only smart we spend down some of our kid\u2019s inheritance before they can get it \u2013 ha! ha!). Acrylic or fiberglass systems you buy at your local home center. 3 Stars \u2013 <\/strong>obviously, there are many choices of fiberglass and acrylic systems in home centers, and their ease of installation varies. And while there are simple to install panel and full shower wall systems in home centers they often don\u2019t come with sealant, adhesives, finishing edge pieces, or window trim kits. In addition, they\u2019re usually short \u2013 and don\u2019t reach the top of an 8\u2019 ceiling, leaving more finishing work for you. They\u2019re generally fair \u2013 but not great to install.
2. BestBath<\/em> 4 Stars \u2013 <\/strong>Many home access contractors have been installing BestBath <\/em>shower surrounds for years \u2013 and have the process of doing these showers down like the back of their hand. However, what causes them to NOT get 5 stars is they can be challenging when walls are our of square. In addition, the majority of their panels don\u2019t reach the ceiling (although with their newer, high-end Crestline combined with a BestBath pans<\/a><\/em> can reach an 8\u2019 ceiling). Also, when it comes to custom sizes, BestBath <\/em>systems are not a cheap date.
3. Fibo<\/em> 3 Stars <\/strong>\u2013 These \u2018click lock\u2019 laminate shower surround panels<\/a> are very cool to look it, but it does take time to get \u2018rockin\u2019 and rollin\u2019 with their installation. Since they\u2019re a rigid wood backed product, and the panels are 23.6\u201d wide x 94.4\u201d high, there are 4 \u2018click locks\u2019 in a tub to shower conversion<\/a>. It can take more time to line up joints between panels. The good news is you will get complete replacement shower kits<\/a> (with the sealants and trims you need) with a Fibo kit. And when you put them on a shower pan they\u2019ll reach the top of an 8\u2019 ceiling. There\u2019s also an excellent network of trainers to help with installation advice.

Here\u2019s how our 4 systems grade along this category.<\/p>Criterion #6 where less seams, a better corner design, and it being easy to sell the system are scored the highest <\/em><\/strong><\/h3>1. Acrylic or fiberglass systems you buy at your local home center. 3 Stars <\/strong>\u2013 With \u2018store bought\u2019 systems you\u2019ll find \u2018full panel\u2019 (up to 60\u201d wide) and small shower panel (or even individual waterproof tile-like systems like Palisades) <\/em> Some systems are butted together in the corners (without waterproof corner trim pieces) and aren\u2019t great. Some use materials which are so flimsy the \u2018click-lock\u2019 edges fall off practically when you look at them (an exaggeration, but not always!). Don\u2019t buy at the store \u2013 or on-line, a system until you\u2019ve seen and touched it. There\u2019s some junk out there which could become YOUR problem!
<\/em>2. BestBath<\/em> 4 Stars <\/strong>The BestBath <\/em>system has been around quite a while. It\u2019s well designed for waterproofing, although some don\u2019t like that it\u2019s seamed horizontally along the back wall.
3. Fibo<\/em> 3 Stars \u2013 <\/strong>While Fibo <\/em>is uber-reliable, you\u2019ll have 4 seamed sections in a 60\u201d x 32\u201d tub to shower conversion<\/a> because the panels are 23.6\u201d wide x 94.4\u201d high. And while it uses a marine grade plywood backing (which even if you immerse these panels in water continuously for 6 months, it WILL NOT be a problem, just try it) \u2013 the integrity of the waterproofing will (in some cases) have to be sold. There are installation videos<\/a> and testimonials on this product, but it will have more seams. Although in most patterns I dare you to find them!
4. PanelPro<\/em> rigid PVC. 5 Stars \u2013 <\/strong>This system in a standard tub to shower conversion only has one seam, which is on a vertical joint in the back. From a waterproofing standpoint there\u2019s also inside corner trims, so an owner does not see the sealant in the corners. In addition, I\u2019d rather have a vertical seam with PanelPro<\/em>, than the horizontal seam in the BestBath <\/em>alternative.<\/a>Criterion #7 \u2013 Appearance and realistic-looking design styles \u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>

Yes, they offer colors, and tile-in-lays which has kicked up their offering a bit, but they\u2019re still not the most exciting IMHO, because they\u2019re molded fiberglass. BestBath <\/em>has introduced Crestline <\/em>which is a knock-off of the Fibo design (laminate over wood) system. After all you see cool tiles coming from Spain and Italy (and of course good pasta as well, says this Italian!). When it comes to wall panels one of the wonderful things about Fibo is they use CNC\u2019s (Computer Numerical Control equipment) to create realistic looking faux grout joints in up to date designs.
