Paying more and more and more (isn\u2019t that redundant?) for PPC ads with declining returns is a place I\u2019d rather not be.<\/p><p>That\u2019s why I was SO happy when I saw my PPC spending last month was a grand total of $59.48. This is because we paused all PPC campaigns for our remodeling, nationwide wholesale and home organization businesses earlier in the month. Our spending next month will be a big fat ZERO.<\/p><p>We have been ratcheting PPC down for a couple of years. I finally came to the point where I could stop paying \u2018the man,\u2019 or \u2018Mr. Google\u2019 (as I like to call him).<\/p><p>You may be wondering how could you do such a thing? Doesn\u2019t every remodeling or home building business who wants digital leads have to buy ads on Google?<\/p><p>Well, this month our total \u2018goal\u2019 count was 1,192 (our goals are free estimates, phone calls, free samples and newsletter sign ups). They were up 33% over last year. Traffic was up 51%. Our digital lead volume is better than ever with virtually zero PPC spending. We\u2019re going \u2018cold turkey.\u2019 We\u2019re coming clean. We\u2019ve gotten off the stuff (\u2018er the stuff would be the magic ferry dust of expensive Google generated clicks).<\/p><p>You know what\u2019s even cooler? Me, my Marketing Manager Michelle Ruhe and our marketing consultant John Paglio of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.takeflyte.com\/\">Flyte New Media<\/a> aren\u2019t geniuses either (my wife Rose will certainly attest to the fact that I\u2019m not a genius!). We haven\u2019t been asked to work at the Genius Bar in the Apple store at the mall either.<\/p><p>What\u2019s even doubly-cool is I know you could wean yourself and your business off \u2018the stuff\u2019 (that would be PPC spending lining Mr. Google\u2019s pockets) too? That is IF you\u2019re willing to \u2018do\u2019 digital marketing with some non-traditional ideas.<\/p><p>You may be asking, \u201cWhat are the non-traditional ideas you\u2019re talking about? Are they even legal in these continuous 48 states?\u201d Well, I have to tell you I\u2019m not recommending illegal (black hat) concepts. In fact, I\u2019m proud to say I\u2019ve never been arrested even once (although the \u2018Magic Bus\u201d Winnebago trip to South Padre Island with 8 fraternity brothers in 1985 might have ended that streak if the cops had pulled us over. But, that\u2019s a story for another day \u2013 ha! ha!).<\/p><p>In this article my goal is simple. I want to spell out ideas which can make your lead generation more effective (without wallet-draining PPC spending). I want to show you it\u2019s possible to become an exclusive, one-of-a-kind company your prospects flock to. You can become the local building and remodeling \u2018celebrity\u2019 with better quality lead generation and a smaller budget. Sound too good to be true?<\/p><p>Well it\u2019s not the easy road or the one well-traveled. It will it take discipline, energy and patience. There\u2019s no free lunch here. But when has growing your remodeling or building business ever been easy street anyway?<\/p><p>In the article I\u2019ll dish up 5 practical ideas which can not only end your addiction to PPC spending, but will position you as \u2018da man or \u2018da woman your kitchen or <a href=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/products\/bathrooms\/laminated-diy-shower-bathroom-wall-panels\">bathroom remodeling<\/a> or new home building prospects won\u2019t want to do without.<br \/><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.lpages.co\/how-to-build-and-boost-your-business\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/dealers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/digital-marketing-ebook.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"469\" height=\"29\" class=\" wp-image-564 aligncenter\" \/><\/a><\/p><p>Does this sound crazy? Read on, then let me know at the end if you think these ideas will work for you.<\/p><h2><strong>Idea #1 \u2013 Recognize everything begins with content which helps your prospects learn \u00a0<\/strong><\/h2><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>You\u2019re buying PPC because you need leads.<\/p><p>You need leads because people aren\u2019t finding your business for free (\u2018er that would be \u2018organically\u2019 to go a little digital marketing geek on you).<\/p><p>So \u2013 all you need is a strategy to get found for free. But how?<\/p><p>The how is by creating and\/or sharing content. I will argue the best type of content is the stuff you (or someone hired by you) creates. It helps people (your prospects) learn. It shows you\u2019re willing to give, before being fortunate enough for the customer to reach out to you for help. If you start \u2018educating first,\u2019 you\u2019ll do an excellent job setting up \u2018selling second.\u2019 You\u2019ve found the secret formula. This formula will kick your competitors butts. But how do you do it, you may ask? Here\u2019s 3 approaches:<\/p><p><strong>Approach #1- Blogging) <\/strong>In my case, I\u2019m a crazy blogger. I write. I write (you&#8217;ll see an image of our original blog &#8211; <em><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">News from the Block<\/a>) <\/em>below. Then I write some more (Michelle and I and John write, promote and manage 3 blogs right now). If writing ain\u2019t the thang for you, take part of the money you\u2019re spending with Mr. Google and find someone to do it for you.<br \/><br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/dealers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Blogging-remodeling-blog.png\" alt=\"Blogging remodeling blog | Innovate Building Solutions | Innovate Builders Blog | #Blogging #RemodelingBlog #BlogIdeas #MarketingIdeas\" width=\"1406\" height=\"1582\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-406\" \/><\/p><p>In fact, I know a woman who does just that. Just know that written content helps you get found\u2026.<\/p><p><strong>FOR FREE! <\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Approach #2 \u2013 Videos) <\/strong>If the idea of writing sounds as fun as a sharp stick in the eye, another \u2013 a better option can be video. Videos are growing like wildfire. However, you may be saying, \u201cMike, I have no doggone idea what to include in videos?\u201d Here\u2019s a few thoughts:<\/p><p>You could do a &#8216;how to install&#8217; video showing your installation process (and explaining why it&#8217;s better than your competitors down the street &#8211; note &#8211; you&#8217;ll see an example of an How to Install video below) . Or shoot a video answering the frequently asked questions about a product(s) which are hot in the market (you\u2019ll see below one we just did about \u00a0FAQ\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/products\/bathrooms\/laminated-diy-shower-bathroom-wall-panels\">laminated wall panels<\/a> we\u2019ve launched in the U.S. \u2013 oops shameless plug there). Include a link on your videos which goes to a specific page on your site for more information. Not sure how to do this?<\/p><p>Listen to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/powertipspodcast.com\/ep-55-why-and-how-to-start-your-own-podcast\/\">Why and How to Start Your Own Podcast<\/a> \u00a0<\/em>with Mark Harari and Victoria Downing. Your potential customers are listening to podcasts in the car or while running or walking the dog. A podcast builds street cred and you may even get a client because of it (I found my digital marketing company in Maine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.takeflyte.com\/\">Flyte New Media<\/a>, by listening to Rich Brook\u2019s (the owners) podcast for 2 years before we connected). EVER! <\/strong><\/h2><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Michelle and I are happy we\u2019re now drawing 110,000 total visitors to our main site (90,000 of these visitors came to our blog each month and the other 20,000 come to our site). With all this exposure we\u2019ve surely \u2018gone viral,\u2019 right? \u2018Er wrong!<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/dealers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Dont-think-youll-be-a-remodeling-internet-celebrity.png\" alt=\"Don't think you'll be a remodeling internet celebrity | Innovate Building Solutions | Innovate Builders Blog  | #InternetCeleb #MarketingTips #BloggingIdeas #SocialMediaContent\" width=\"1397\" height=\"971\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-405\" \/><\/p><p>OK &#8211; this isn&#8217;t an image of me with shades, but you get the idea!<br \/><br \/>When I go to the grocery store with my daughter, I don\u2019t have to wear shades to mask my \u2018celebrity\u2019 identity. I\u2019m pretty much as generic a dude as I\u2019ve ever been. I\u2019m not even (yet) referring to myself in the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> person (and neither is Michelle, to the best of my knowledge).<br \/><br \/><\/p><p>The primary reason we get found is because Michelle promotes the living daylights out of content (our blog posts mostly in our case).<\/p><p>She\u2019s does this through programs like <a href=\"https:\/\/meetedgar.com\/\">MeetEdgar<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/buffer.com\/\">Buffer<\/a> which moves our content through LinkedIn, Facebook, and (oh do we love) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/innovatebuild\/waterproof-laminate-diy-panels\/\">Pinterest<\/a>.<\/p><p>Let\u2019s face it, you and I are in the niche remodeling business. We aren\u2019t likely to become the next Joanna Gaines or blogger whose is also a paid \u2018influencer.\u2019 Sure \u2013 it\u2019s possible. Should we count on it? No way.<\/p><p>The goal is to create content, then spin it out. If we \u2018go viral\u2019 or become the next \u2018Joanna Gaines\u2019 that \u2018might\u2019 be cool., Even if it did happen, we would be the \u2018overnight sensation\u2019 who made it after years of hard work (like most overnight sensations). \u00a0<\/p><p>Create content. Distribute content. Then repeat. Use tools to keep your content consistently on the \u2018social media highway.\u2019 Include links (and lead magnets \u2013 more about this later) which drive free traffic and new prospects.<\/p><h2><strong>Idea #3 &#8211; Build a \u2018fan club\u2019 (AKA an email list)\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2><p>Your best customers are your past customers.<\/p><p>They loved you once (assuming you did a nice job). They can love you again.<\/p><p>However, your best customers also move on in life. They get busy with their own stuff. They may not even remember (or know) you also do kitchen remodels or replacement windows or build custom homes.<\/p><p>You\u2019re out of their consciousness.<\/p><p>The question becomes, how do you stay \u2018top of mind?\u2019 How do get them to know your services and products and remember your business when the timing is right for another project?<br \/><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.lpages.co\/innovate-builders-blog-opt-in\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/dealers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/JOIN-IBB.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"441\" height=\"32\" class=\"wp-image-356  aligncenter\" \/><\/a><\/p><p>The best way I know is to build a fan club (AKA an email list).<\/p><p>When people sign up to get your \u2018content\u2019 (OK \u2013 we\u2019re back to that again) you\u2019re educating them. Over time they will start seeing YOU as the expert. They\u2019re more likely to remember (and respect how you can help them) you when they\u2019re remodeling or building a new home.<\/p><p>Not sure how to get them to \u2018sign up for your content?\u201d Well you need a better offer than a button on your web site which says, \u201cSIGN UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTER.\u201d<\/p><p>How boring is that? Don\u2019t most people get enough email junk already? Well I\u2019ll answer that for you. Yes, they do.<\/p><p>So how do you get them interested in your content? How do you bring them into your \u2018fan club\u2019 with information they feel will be of value? You use a lead magnet. This is a \u2018lure\u2019 (to use a fishing analogy \u2013 although I don\u2019t know carp \u2026\u2019er that would be crap about fishing). Create (or do what we do and have your digital marketing \u00a0guy John develop) a lead magnet with a group of useful articles or tips which answer your prospect\u2019s questions to earn email sign ups. They get information of value; you get the ability to continue to provide them with more useful information. They remember you and your company when the time is right.<br \/><br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/dealers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Lead-magnets-for-Marketing-Lead-Growth.png\" alt=\"Lead magnets for Marketing Lead Growth | Innovate Building Solutions | Innovate Builders Blog | #LeadMagnet #LeadGen #GeneratingLeads #QualityClients\" width=\"1401\" height=\"707\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-407\" \/><\/p><p>This is the way to build your fan club. I was SO excited this month to go over the 20,000 people on our \u2018fan club.\u2019 We started with zero 8 years ago. It\u2019s possible to stay at the top of your prospects mind for virtually no extra money. A fan club is built one person at a time. Have patience. It pays off. With your email newsletter list, you\u2019ll get more repeat or referral business for free (that magic work again) because you\u2019re top of mind.<br \/><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.lpages.co\/how-to-build-and-boost-your-business\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/dealers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/digital-marketing-ebook.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"469\" height=\"29\" class=\" wp-image-564 aligncenter\" \/><\/a><\/p><h2><strong>Idea #4 \u2013 Don\u2019t wait to be asked. Volunteer to build your \u2018digital resume\u2019 so people remember you <\/strong><\/h2><p>How do people become \u2018celebrities\u2019 (I\u2019ll use this term loosely here) in their industry? I would argue one key thing they do is to raise their hands. They do stuff and stick their necks out when others stay on the sidelines.<\/p><p>If you want to get better known in the digital universe for your expertise don\u2019t wait for someone to call you. In the beginning you\u2019re nobody. OK -that\u2019s probably too harsh. At least to your Mom you\u2019re the greatest and to your spouse you\u2019re at least OK most of the days. However, if you take the time to \u2018become known\u2019 you\u2019ll get the benefit of waaaay better quality leads than PPC can ever deliver. Here\u2019s 2 things you can do to make this happen:<\/p><ul><li>Write down what you know.<\/li><li>Let the right people know where you can help.<\/li><\/ul><p>I\u2019ll give you an example of how I used this process. Two years ago, I started a <a href=\"https:\/\/innovatehomeorg.com\/\">home organization<\/a> division called Innovate Home Org in Columbus. We do <a href=\"https:\/\/innovatehomeorg.com\/rooms\/custom-closet-organization-systems\/\">custom closet<\/a>, pantries and garage cabinetry. In this industry I was a rookie (well, at least with designing and installing organization systems). I wasn\u2019t a rookie about digital marketing. So, what did I do?<\/p><p>I volunteered to write about digital marketing in the industry publication <em>Closets and Organized Storage. <\/em>The editor (who probably was desperate for some free content anyways) gave me a try. This writing earned our business links to our site (a win for our Search Engine Optimization). I\u2019ve even gotten referral leads in my local area from closet companies in other markets whose customers have moved to Columbus Ohio. These types of \u2018influencer\u2019 leads aren\u2019t possible even with unlimited PPC spending.<br \/><br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/dealers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Volunteer-for-digital-marketing-opportunities.png\" alt=\"Volunteer for digital marketing opportunities | Innovate Building Solutions | Innovate Builders Blog | #VolunteerWork #DigitalMarketing #MarketingIdeas #RemodelingTips\" width=\"1400\" height=\"743\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-408\" \/><\/p><p>So, my lesson for you is to raise your hand to write, speak or contribute digitally what you do know. Even being a rookie in a new industry (me in the closet biz) you can get some \u2018digital love\u2019 if you\u2019re willing to mix in some good ol\u2019 fashioned guts.<\/p><h2><strong>Idea #5 \u2013 Add a little \u2018<em>Hans and Franz\u2019 <\/em>and Pump, Your Content Up! <\/strong><\/h2><p>I don\u2019t know if this is before your time, but it was pure fun hearing the characters Hans and Franz on <em>Saturday Night Live <\/em>in the late 1980\u2019s saying it\u2019s time to \u201c<em>Pump You Up!!!\u201d <\/em>If you\u2019ve never heard Hans and Franz, I\u2019ve included a clip below (hey it\u2019s always a good time for mindless entertainment).<\/p><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PTxA35jKufc\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>Right now, you\u2019re probably asking why I\u2019m bringing up Hans and Franz in this article about ending your addiction to PPC and getting \u2018free leads for your remodeling or building business?<p>Well, the reason is because most content (blog posts, videos or podcasts) sucks (IMHO) because it\u2019s boring. Sure, we might try to read, view or listen to boring content if we have to. However, most of us have the attention span of a gnat and click off \u2018boring\u2019 ASAP.<\/p><p>Your content has to have personality. It has to (as Hans and Franz say), \u201cPump You Up!\u201d<\/p><p>Have fun with your videos, podcast or writing. Don\u2019t be afraid to be your wacky self. People see fake news and boring content a mile away. Don\u2019t write or speak or go live on camera with a bunch of flowery-corporate-sounding B.S. jargon. Don\u2019t be \u2018fully engaged,\u2019 talk about \u2018touching base\u2019 or say \u2018at the end of the day\u2019 (add your own meaningless corporate phrase here).<\/p><p>Remember that \u2018edutainment\u2019 and storytelling are far more effective ways to inspire action than \u2018educating\u2019 in a boring way. Remember your favorite teachers or professors in high school or college and I\u2019ll bet the PPC money you won\u2019t be spending they weren\u2019t boring. They were fun, entertaining and smart.<\/p><p>Be you, but work to pump people up. Have fun with your content. Fun content will generate leads (and a personal connection) which paid PPC is incapable of.<\/p><h2><strong>Conclusion <\/strong><\/h2><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>After reading these 5 ideas to end your addiction to PPC spending and start getting free leads through content are you game to give it a try?<\/p><p>Why or why not? I\u2019ll bet you money most people will do NOTHING with this article. But, here\u2019s what I\u2019ll tell you.<\/p><p>The people who will reallocate money away from PPC and put it into content creation, content promotion, building an email list will get a far higher return on investment than playing the PPC bidding war games with their competitors.<\/p><p>Does this mean you should completely eliminate PPC? I don\u2019t think that would be smart. What I would say is you need to start creating and pushing content to get out of the \u2018rat-race\u2019 of run-away PPC spending. Slowly wean PPC down as the results of your content program improve.<\/p><p>You know when it\u2019s the best time to get this strategy moving? I\u2019d argue right now.<\/p><p>Are you willing to take the plunge?
