You even survived the Great Building Recession of 2008. However, when has easy ever been associated with a remodeling business? Is it critical to do and \u2018do-able?\u201d Absolutely. Let\u2019s check out the tips.<\/p><h2><strong>Step #1 \u2013 Recognize knowing how to \u2018do the work\u2019 isn\u2019t enough. Develop a plan (and get help if you\u2019ve never been down the road before) \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2><p>You started this business because you know how to install cabinets or how to sweat in a valve or tape and mud walls. In short, you are a competent contractor.<\/p><p>However, today what you really need to know is how to lead (and manage) a (hopefully) growing, profitable remodeling business.<\/p><p>Doing the work of contracting and leading a successful remodeling business are two separate skill sets. Or find a business coach. Almost every construction company needs more people. As you know skilled field labor is a needle in a haystack to find.<\/p><p>The best people (the ones you really want on your payroll) are looking for a future. They want a reason to show up in the morning (other than simply getting a paycheck). They want interesting work. They want to know they\u2019re important and are contributing to a company which is \u2018going somewhere.\u2019<\/p><p>If they don\u2019t know the plan, they\u2019ll (correctly) conclude there is no plan. Your business is a ship without a rudder or captain.<\/p><p>It\u2019s your job to explain the direction, the plan for your business.<\/p><p>Let your people know the following:<\/p><ul><li>Describe what type of work you\u2019re going after? What size or type of job you want to do?<\/li><li>Explain how you plan to find and sell jobs. \u00a0<\/li><li>Identify how they\u2019ll be needed (and counted on) to help the business grow.<\/li><\/ul><p>We all want to feel important, to feel needed, to have a purpose. However, things aren\u2019t the same. Just because your Mom and Dad worked 60 to 70 hours (and you do also) doesn\u2019t mean this mirrors the aspirations of people in your business today.<\/p><p>You can\u2019t make people be you\u2026and maybe this isn\u2019t the best thing anyway.<\/p><p>Society, and people\u2019s relationships with work has changed. Younger people want work-life balance. They want to be inspired by their work.<\/p><p>Times have changed. Your \u2018tude (attitude) has to change with them. Otherwise you may become \u2018road-kill\u2019 in your desire to grow this business once again.<\/p><p>The challenge becomes how to make things better (and different) than they are today. How do you change things up to have a \u2018team of people,\u2019 not just a \u2018bunch of workers de \u2018jour who are on your payroll until they find something better? Here\u2019s three ideas to get moving in the right direction:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Idea #1) Interview the \u2018person\u2019 first and learn about work skills second \u2013 <\/strong>As Zig Ziglar once said, \u201cPeople don\u2019t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.\u201d Instead of interviewing to figure out how competent a person is first, spend time in an interview to get to know them as a person (not as a worker). Here\u2019s some questions you can ask:<\/li><\/ul><ul><ul><li>What do they care about?<\/li><li>What\u2019s important in their lives?<\/li><li>What person has influenced their lives? Let them know (right from the beginning) you want to get to know them, you care about them and will do your best to help them grow.<\/p><ul><li><strong>Idea #2) If you don\u2019t love \u2018em, it will be easier to lose \u2018em \u2013<\/strong> There was a time when people were just grateful to have a construction job. Work was tight. Jobs were few. This isn\u2019t the remodeling world you and I live in today. After the Great Construction Recession of 2008 many people left our industry (and never returned). Now workers are few and far between. If you aren\u2019t loving (showing appreciation for a job well done, giving opportunities to learn and grow) you run the risk of those same people saying \u2018see-ya.\u2019 And they won\u2019t look back twice when they gratefully let open the door to their new future. Are you capable of giving compliments for a job well done? Do you give them new things to learn and do? If you don\u2019t, there are dozens of other remodelers who will (gladly) pouch even those you consider to be your \u2018average\u2019 employee.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Idea #3) Delegate and \u2018celebrate\u2019 people who do it better than you \u2013<\/strong> To grow you need to not only find, but to celebrate the successes of your team. Look for examples where you\u2019ve delegated work and the person doing it now is actually doing it better than you. Communicate with the rest of the team their contribution. Projects, longer to-do lists and follow ups you\u2019ve got to get done. Meanwhile others who work in your business are bored. Unbeknownst to you, they\u2019ve got the \u2018word out\u2019 they want to get out.<\/p><p>They feel like they\u2019re in a dead-end job.\u00a0 They\u2019re bored. What\u2019s dangerous to you is in today\u2019s market it will be easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy for them to find the door and move on (and that door won\u2019t kick them in the backend either \u2013 it will be YOU who will be suffering).<br \/><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.lpages.co\/how-to-build-and-boost-your-business\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/dealers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/digital-marketing-ebook.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"469\" height=\"29\" class=\" wp-image-564 aligncenter\" \/><\/a><\/p><p>How can you get your team (notice I didn\u2019t say workers) motivated and stop burning the \u2018midnight oil\u2019 yourself (even if there\u2019s no actual oil you\u2019re burning)? It starts by asking 3 questions:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Question #1) What can I stop doing? <\/strong>Go back to your plan in step 1. Where will your business be focused? This week, jot down what you\u2019re doing. Then go back to where you\u2019re headed and see what things you\u2019re doing which aren\u2019t essential to where you\u2019re going. Stop doing (or delegate or outsource) items on this list IMMEDIATELY!<\/li><\/ul><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/dealers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/priorities-as-a-remodeling-contractor-900x598.jpg\" alt=\"priorities as a remodeling contractor | Innovate Building Solutions | Innovate Builders Blog | #RemodelingContractor #Prioritizing #PlanningProjects\" width=\"1014\" height=\"674\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/dealers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/priorities-as-a-remodeling-contractor-900x598.jpg 900w, https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/dealers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/priorities-as-a-remodeling-contractor-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/dealers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/priorities-as-a-remodeling-contractor.jpg 1196w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1014px) 100vw, 1014px\" \/><\/p><ul><li><strong>Question #2) What\u2019s my \u2018highest and best use?<\/strong>\u201d When I look at myself, I know there\u2019s several things I can do (and some things I can enjoy doing). However, the real question is what the most important things are <strong>I SHOULD be doing<\/strong> to get the best return on my time (and profits for the biz). While I love to work with our individual homeowners, I know what I should be doing is working with our nationwide <a href=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/dealers\/\">wall panel dealer<\/a> network (growing consistent buyers) and larger accounts (multi-unit housing projects, apartments, student housing units) where the deals and returns are bigger. I\u2019m training others to work with the consumers, to free my time up to work with the bigger accounts. In your situation, are you spending time on activities which aren\u2019t generating the highest return on your time?<\/li><\/ul><br \/><ul><li><strong>Question #3) Ask people on your team, \u201cWhere would you like to contribute?\u201d <\/strong>You can try to be a mind-reader (and unless you\u2019re a card-carrying member (if there is such a card) of the \u2018Psychic Friends Hotline\u2019 you\u2019re likely to be off the mark). You don\u2019t know what you don\u2019t ask to understand how your people would like to learn and grow. Meet one on one with your team. Ask them what they\u2019d like to learn. How they feel they can contribute beyond what they do today. Their answers may not only surprise you but may be the key to getting you more help and evolving towards your \u2018highest and best use\u2019 outlined in question 2.<\/li><\/ul><h2><strong>Step #5 \u2013 Understand today\u2019s the next day on your journey, yesterday (no matter how bad it was) is DONE. Seek out help, inspiration and growth along this journey. <\/strong><\/h2><p>As you know growing a remodeling business is anything, but simple. However, you\u2019ve made it this far. That says a lot about you and your determination. How many people can say they launched a business and it\u2019s been around more than a year or two? The answer is \u2013 not many.<\/p><p>However, with this being said you\u2019re still frustrated and need to get on a better path than where you are today.
