In this article, I\u2019ll provide ideas to work on point #3 which is how to get more profits without having to find more needle-in-a-haystack highly skilled people. The \u2018Captain Obvious\u2019 question though is how?<\/p><p>Let\u2019s look at 10 simple ideas to help you generate more profits without adding more people in your bathroom remodeling business.<\/p><h2><strong>Idea #1 \u2013 Get rid of time-consuming processes. Stop tiling shower and tub surrounds. Use decorative wall panels. <\/strong><\/h2><p>For those of you who\u2019ve played the boat arcade game <em>Hydro Thunder<\/em> you know life is good when you\u2019re playing the game and hear the words \u2018time extended.\u2019 Then you know you\u2019re winning and get to play longer for your $.75 investment.<\/p><p>However, when you \u2018play the game of leading a bathroom remodeling business\u2019 having your \u2018time extended\u2019 is a drain on profits. <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ubh39oCuNYU\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/><br \/>It\u2019s also an aggravation for your customers who (no matter how much they love your crews) wants the job done and your crews and subs out of their house.<\/p><p>When you look at bathroom remodeling projects there\u2019s one trade which gives you a \u2018time extension\u2019 on every job. Your customers are no different than you. They think buying their own materials will save them money. However, they often don\u2019t know what you do as a contractor and what specific parts are better and longer lasting. They don\u2019t realize the installation hassles involved with a cheaper shower valve. They don\u2019t realize the time wasted with warped lumber.<\/p><p>All they know is they want to save a few bucks and eliminate contractor markups. And they want a professional installation guaranteed by you. However, if a cheaper homeowner supplied part goes bad, guess who they\u2019ll expect to fix it? That would be YOU!<\/p><p>If your customer insists on supplying materials let them know you will not warranty their materials and will charge for the repair and replacement. If you supply materials, they\u2019ll be covered under your warranty.<\/p><p>As you know it takes more time to install a cheaper part, than a quality part. Don\u2019t let your labor margins get blown up with poor quality customer-supplied parts. \u00a0<\/p><h2><strong>Idea #4 \u2013 Look for products which turn a \u2018custom\u2019 job into a standard one \u00a0<\/strong><\/h2><p>How many times did you \u2018think\u2019 you had a job perfectly planned only to have the schedule blow up in your face?<\/p><p>The custom shower pan with the 5-week lead time arrived 2 days before you needed it. Yes! However, when you opened the package it was broken.<\/p><p>Or conversely, the odd-sized shower wall panels came in on time and intact. Yes! However, one of your guys slipped going up the stairs with the 120 lb. stone panel and it cracked before it even got to the bathroom. \u00a0<\/p><p>While you realize \u2018mistakes can and do happen\u2019 now you\u2019ll have to \u2018eat\u2019 the cost of a new shower wall panels and\/or wait (again) for version 2 of the custom pan. This means you need to \u2018pull off the job\u2019 and suck up the costs of returning to the site again. The question is, are there ways to lessen the chance of these problems occurring? The answer is yes.<\/p><p>When it comes to custom shower pans, what many contractors don\u2019t realize is there are systems which can turn a \u2018custom job\u2019 into a standard one. For example, let\u2019s say your customer needs a 60\u201d x 36\u201d shower pan \u2013 but wants a \u2018side-loaded\u2019 entry on the 36\u201d size. This sounds like a custom installation, but it doesn\u2019t have to be with a product called a \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/products\/bathrooms\/contemporary-acrylic-shower-pans-bases\">Flex-Pan<\/a>\u2019 \u2013 where the flanges are added to this <a href=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/products\/bathrooms\/contemporary-acrylic-shower-pans-bases\">contemporary acrylic pan<\/a> on whichever side(s) you\u2019d like. As you know selections can bring your project to a screeching halt. If the trade you count on before you doesn\u2019t have their act together, Houston YOU HAVE A PROBLEM!<\/p><p>There in lies the challenge with owner-supplied subs. Just like owner supplied materials (discussed in idea 3), your customer\u2019s wants to save money. No one can fault them for that.<\/p><p>However, a subcontractor on your job (whether you hire them or not) is a member of your team (unless their work is done after you\u2019re out of there and paid). If they\u2019re incompetent, unreliable it will be your problem. When you \u2018find this out\u2019 after your crew shows up to do the next step but can\u2019t because the subs work isn\u2019t done, guess who\u2019s eating the bill for this time loss? That would be you.<br \/><br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/dealers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Unprofessional-subcontractors-on-a-remodeling-job.png\" alt=\"Unprofessional subcontractors on a remodeling job | Innovate Building Solutions | Innovate Builders Blog | #SubContractors #BathroomRemodeling #UnprofessionalContractors #RemodelingJob\" width=\"900\" height=\"703\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-729\" \/><\/p><p>So, let prospective customers know you prefer to use your own subcontractors. While this (generally) isn\u2019t the optimal situation \u2013 you may find a new sub, who is even better than the old sub. \u00a0<strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><h2><strong>Idea #7 \u2013 Offer more value on the same job <\/strong><\/h2><p>Our company works with many <a href=\"https:\/\/innovatebuildingsolutions.com\/dealers\/\">shower wall panel dealers<\/a> across the country who focus on the \u2018wet area.\u2019 They only want to work in the shower\/tub alcove. However, even though I\u2019m a glass-half-full guy I know (and want you to know also) estimating in a \u2018Pollyannaish\u2019 world is not smart.<\/p><p>While (in a perfect world) you\u2019d have your most efficient crew on every job this isn\u2019t how the \u2018real\u2019 world works. Sometimes due to scheduling conflicts your \u2018B or C\u2019 crew will end up doing the job you hoped your \u2018A crew\u2019 would have time to do.<\/p><p>When pricing jobs never assume \u2018A crew\u2019 efficiencies for you labor estimates \u2013 unless you want to watch margins erode. <strong>\u00a0<\/strong>For your bids, assume every job is done by your \u2018middle-of-the-road\u2019 crew.<\/p><h2><strong>Idea #10 \u2013 Less barking and more asking <\/strong><\/h2><p>The only person who thinks they have a monopoly on good ideas is an idiot. <strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p>However, when managing people our natural instincts can be to \u2018bark out orders\u2019 and <em>tell <\/em>others what to do. While this strategy can be essential in an emergency, in bathroom remodeling the challenge is always to find the better, quicker and faster way. And this better way can be most obvious to those closest to the \u2018field of play\u2019 (\u2018er closest to where the work is being done).<\/p><p>Be truthful and ask yourself, \u201cAm I effectively delegating or just barking out (half-followed) instructions? Am I asking my people closest to the work, how do you think this could or should be done?\u201d<\/p><p>While we can all be \u2018legends in our own mind\u2019 at times, true innovation (and efficiency) is often (literally) at the hands of those doing the work.<\/p><p>Are you asking your field team and subs for ideas to make your processes more efficient?<\/p><h2><strong>Conclusion <\/strong><\/h2><p>Since the labor problem is unlikely to get better as a bathroom remodeling contractor you\u2019ve got to get smarter to improve profits while using the same number of people on a project.<\/p><p>You\u2019ve got to look for innovative products which save time and labor.<\/p><p>You\u2019ve got to be more thoughtful (or forceful) working with customers and their desire to tell you the materials and labor they want you to use on a job. \u00a0<\/p><p>You\u2019ve got to look for ways to simplify the process and add more value (and service) to your customers.<\/p><p>The reality is you and I both need to look for ways to change and evolve to better serve a more demanding customer, despite our shrinking pool of labor.
