Shower Remodeling & Replacement in Cleveland Ohio
Bath Doctor from Innovate Building Solutions
If your shower has seen its better days (actually many years ago), you know it’s time for a replacement. And if you’re like most, you’re determined to NOT repeat the mistakes of the past. You don’t want a ‘plasticky’ shower which becomes stained and won’t come clean no matter what solution you try. You don’t want moldy and dirty grout joints which brings you to your ‘hands and knees’ with the tile scrub brush you hate. And you don’t want a shower which is unsafe and doesn’t have the seating and storage you desperately need.
In this page the Shower Specialists from The Bath Doctor division of Innovate Building Solutions want to show you how a shower remodeling company can not only solve these problems but design a shower you’ll love to use.
In this page you’ll learn the following:
- The benefits of a shower replacement project.
- How Innovate’s process will simplify the project for you.
- Product options to customize your shower.
- Frequently asked questions about shower remodeling.
Benefits of Remodeling Your Shower Stall
A safe shower – If the curb of your existing shower or tub is dangerously high, a low-profile shower replacement pan can ease your worries of a trip to the emergency room.
A stylishly renovated shower – Maybe you’ve always dreamed of a sleek minimalist shower. Or the idea of a traditional subway tile design is the style you long for. If your existing shower is ‘so-behind-the-times,’ a shower remodeling project can get your bathroom out of the dark ages. And with grout free wall panels you can get these looks without eating your time maintaining the space.
Easy to clean and mold–free walls and bases – Maintaining tile grout joints or ‘trying’ to scrub plastic walls and pans which won’t come clean is time you’d rather spend doing ANYTHING else. Swap out your high-maintenance tile walls and shower floor with grout free wall panels (with 4 fun options) and low maintenance acrylic and solid surface shower pans.
Grow your space – Stop banging your elbows on the sides of your shallow stand-up shower stall. Using innovative products liked curved glass enclosures (you’ll learn more about below) and walk in showers you’ll able to grow your space and enjoy taking a shower.
Add storage, safety, and seating – If you’re forced to put your shower bottles inside a cheap plastic caddy and have no place to sit down to shave your legs, it’s not hard to see how a shower remodel could make it much nicer to get ready in the morning.
More efficient use of water – Bathrooms use more than 50% of the water supply in your home. With a shower remodeling project, you can not only increase the efficiency (and lower the cost) of the water you need, but also get the stylish rain head or hand-held shower you’ve always wanted.
Return on investment – Bathroom remodels offer one of the highest returns on investment according to the Cost/Value Study done by Remodeling Magazine.
Innovate’s Simple 4-step Shower Replacement Process
We know thinking through the products and installation process of a shower remodel IS NOT something you do every day (or even every 20 years). The goal of The Bath Doctor division of Innovate Building Solutions is to simplify this project for you with this 4-step process:
-
Step 1 – Understand your needs – our process begins by learning the problems with your existing shower and how you want it to work (and look) better.
-
Step 2 – Develop a plan and a firm budget – Given your needs, Bath Doctor will recommend products and installation approaches to solve your problems and create a shower which is also respectful of your budget. We’ll develop a scope of work and give you a written estimate.
-
Step 3 – Demo and prepare the walls, floor, and plumbing – During the demo we’ll take care to respect your property with tarps and surface protection systems. Once the demo is done, we’ll ONLY USE the proper (not the cheapest) subfloor, wall backer and plumbing systems to ensure a quality project which lasts.
-
Step 4 – Install the finishing materials – This is where things get fun. Seeing your stylish (yet sturdy) shower pans or barrier free shower floor, shower wall surrounds, and trend-setting glass enclosures and accessories is where you see the finished project come alive.
Product Options for Your Shower Remodeling Project
You never knew a shower remodeling project could require so many decisions. You’ll start with a shower floor pan. Then move up to the shower wall surrounds. Next, you’ll choose shower door glass (or curtains). Finally, the accessories, shower heads and window to make your stall more pleasant to use.
At Bath Doctor it’s our goal to help you not only with the best design for your shower, but the best products to fit your style and budget. Below you’ll find a description of our more popular products available for your shower remodeling project (whether you’re doing a custom walk-in shower or a standard 3-sided alcove space).
Standard and custom shower pans or roll-in showers
Choose contemporary reinforced acrylic and stone shower pans for an ultra-low maintenance shower. Or opt for a classic tile shower using a waterproof ready for tile base. And if you want a barrier free roll in shower, see how The Bath Doctor can assist you with a wet room system which does not require cutting into your joists underneath the floor.
And you’ll be glad to know it doesn’t matter whether you need a standard or custom sized shower base, the Bath Doctor has a shower replacement pan for you.
Replacement shower wall panels
With Innovate’s Bath Doctor division you won’t be stuck choosing between a cheap plastic wall surround or high-maintenance tile walls. Innovate specializes in shower wall panels and offers 4 alternatives for you.
- 3/8” thick Laminate wall panels
- 3/8” thick solid surface wall panels
- 1/4” thick decorative PVC composite panels
- 5/16” thick optical grade high gloss acrylic panels
Glass shower doors for walk-in designs. Rectangular, corner, NEO angle, curved, sliding, pivoting or bypass doors for full enclosures
Glass shower doors can not only show off your stylish wall surrounds but they keep the water and heat inside. Choose from a wide variety of glass enclosures which will make your space feel bigger and add architectural style of your room with a variety of finishes and designs.
And if you want the simplicity of a walk-in shower, see how Bath Doctor can assist you even if your shower is as narrow as 48” wide.
Shower heads, body sprays and hand-held showers
Would your shower work best with a rain head, a hand-held unit, or a stationary head? Where should the turn on and turn off valve be located so you don’t get doused with a cold blast of water every time you turn your shower on? What type of shower head is best to conserve water?
Bath Doctor will help you make these important choices.
Shower accessories for storage, seating, and safety
The right accessories will make or break your shower experience.
How can you include seating (and not make a cramped shower) to shave your legs or provide a place to sit for someone who is mobility challenged to shower independently?
What type of shelving or niches do you need to store your lotions and potions?
Where should you put the grab bars for a safe shower? What choices do you have which won’t make your new shower look like a hospital room?
The shower specialists at The Bath Doctor can answer these questions for you.
Shower windows
A shower window is wonderful to let in natural light, except when you’re worried about your creepy neighbor next door.
Choosing a shower window which offers privacy yet doesn’t cut off your light (and make your shower more dangerous) is a must. Bath Doctor offers a range of high privacy vinyl replacement windows or glass block windows to give you light and privacy.
Frequently Asked Questions About Tub to Shower Conversion Projects
If you’re replacing a standard sized shower with a new shower in the same area, most projects (using grout free wall panels and premade bases) are done in 1 to 2 days. For more custom replacement showers allow 3 to 5 days to complete.
While money-saving ideas will be best developed after seeing your bathroom, here’s a few strategies to cut installed costs of remodeling a shower:
- Don’t move the plumbing. There are custom shower pans (in both solid surface and ready for tile styles) where the pan can be pre-sloped to your existing drain location.
- Use grout free wall panels vs. ceramic tile (which also cuts maintenance)
- Do your own demolition.
- Use solid one-piece shower pans vs. a tile shower floor.
Use standard size glass shower doors, pans, windows, and wall surrounds and limit customization.
Mold is the enemy of a healthy bathroom and shower. Grout free shower pans, decorative wall surrounds, exhaust fans and operable windows are smart products for a healthy (and mold free) shower.
While the decision between a shower pan with a curb and a curbless design should be driven by the current (and future) needs of your family, it’s less costly to buy a shower pan with a curb – than use a ‘wet room’ system without a curb.
It’s best to use a curbless design when you have a family member who needs the assistance of a wheelchair or you love the minimalistic look of a one level bathroom.
It’s best to use a shower pan with a curb (which are available in curb heights from 1 ½” to 4” high) in the following cases:
- When you have a concrete floor (so you don’t have to cut the floor),
- When you can’t find a contractor who’s done a curbless bathroom before
- When you want a bathroom which is simpler to waterproof.

We most certainly can. We understand it’s hard for an owner – who may remodel their kid’s or master bathroom every 20 years – to know the right products, sizes, and installation process to get a quality job which fits their budget. It’s our job to guide you through shower replacement options – whether it’s with one on one during a bathroom design consultation or in a virtual appointment or with shower design articles through our News From The Block Blog or educational YouTube videos.
Tile showers look beautiful after the shower is just completed. Also tile showers can be installed with a wide range of patterns. However, they do have their drawbacks. And this is where grout free shower pans and walls come in.
Choose grout free options to eliminate leaks, reduce project costs and to throw out your tile scrub brush and cut time cleaning your shower.
If you’re considering ‘lining over’ (or covering over) old tiles with a wall panel system, we recommend against it. If you do this, you can trap mold between the new wall panels and your old tile walls. While ‘covering over’ is a quicker process it can lead to serious health problems down the road.
The best way to keep water in a 60” wide by 30” to 36” deep walk-in shower is to use a curved or pivoting glass system where the glass can be angled back to the drain. Good options include pivoting glass shower doors or a curved walk-in glass block shower.
While it’s always nice to create a larger shower, sometimes your space won’t accommodate a bigger design. In these cases, there are several things you can do to allow your small shower to ‘live’ bigger. Consider these ideas:
- Use large format tile- patterns vs. small tiles so the space feels bigger.
- Use lighter colors.
- Build your storage systems into the wall (with recessed niches) to conserve space.
- Use curved glass to expand the inside space of the shower – even if the side walls are shallow.
Yes – exhaust fans reduce humidity and the chance of mold and mildew. An exhaust fan with a timer is smart in case you forget to turn it off.
Walk in showers are nice for people in wheelchairs, to create a smart contemporary look and to cut the cost of using a full glass enclosure.
Shower enclosures are preferred to keep the heat inside and eliminate water getting on the bathroom floor.
